Koppers Holdings Inc. produces and sells carbon compounds and commercial wood treatment products and services to aluminum, railroad, specialty chemical, utility, rubber, concrete, and steel industries. It operates in two segments, Carbon Materials & Chemicals and Railroad & Utility Products. The Carbon Materials & Chemicals segment manufactures carbon pitch, a raw material used in the production of aluminum and steel; naphthalene for use in the production of phthalic anhydride and as a surfactant in the production of concrete; phthalic anhydride that is used in the production of plasticizers, polyester resins, and alkyd paints; and creosote and carbon black feedstock used in the treatment of wood or as a feedstock in the production of carbon black. This segment also sells refined tars, benzole, and specialty chemicals. The Railroad & Utility Products segment procures and treats railroad products comprising concrete crossties, switch ties, and various types of lumber used for railroad bridges and crossings; manufactures and sells rail joint bars; offers transmission and distribution poles for electric and telephone utilities; and provides pilings used in the industrial foundations, beach housing, docks, and piers. It has operations in the United States, Australia, China, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Koppers Holdings Inc., formerly known as KI Holdings Inc., is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
