The Carbon Materials & Chemicals segment manufactures carbon pitch, a raw material used in the production of aluminum and steel; naphthalene for use in the production of phthalic anhydride and as a surfactant in the production of concrete; phthalic anhydride that is used in the production of plasticizers, polyester resins, and alkyd paints; and creosote and carbon black feedstock used in the treatment of wood or as a feedstock in the production of carbon black. This segment also sells refined tars, benzole, and specialty chemicals. The Railroad & Utility Products segment procures and treats railroad products comprising concrete crossties, switch ties, and various types of lumber used for railroad bridges and crossings; manufactures and sells rail joint bars; offers transmission and distribution poles for electric and telephone utilities; and provides pilings used in the industrial foundations, beach housing, docks, and piers. It has operations in the United States, Australia, China, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
