Single payer healthcare is a system in which a single public or quasi-public agency organizes healthcare financing, but delivery of care remains largely in private hands. In a single payer system, all residents of the country are covered for essential healthcare services, and the costs of healthcare are paid out of a single public fund, rather than from multiple sources such as private insurance companies.
