Influenza viruses are a group of viruses that cause the flu, a contagious respiratory illness. Influenza viruses are divided into four types: A, B, C, and D. Influenza A and B are the most common and cause seasonal epidemics of disease. Influenza C is less common and usually causes milder illness. Influenza D is found mainly in cattle and does not infect humans.
