Nasal polyps are small, noncancerous growths that develop in the lining of the nose or sinuses. They are usually soft and painless, and can range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters. They can cause a variety of symptoms, including a blocked or stuffy nose, a reduced sense of smell, and a whistling sound when breathing. Treatment usually involves medications, such as corticosteroids, or surgery.
