Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialty of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. This includes the jaws, mouth, face, and neck. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained to diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions, including facial trauma, impacted teeth, cysts and tumors of the jaws, cleft lip and palate, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
