Update: The Art of the Soft Landing
2 months ago by Calculated Risk @ Calculated Risk
Back in June, I wrote: The Art of the Soft Landing A few excerpts and an updated graph ...The "Art of the Soft Landing" requires that the Fed reduce rates quick enough to keep economic growth positive, and slow enough not to reignite inflation. My view is a soft landing is achieved if growth stays positive, inflation returns to target, and the yield curve flattens or reverts to normal (long yields higher than short yields). The good news is growth has stayed positive and inflation has moved closer to the 2% target. However, the yield curve is still inverted, and we are not out of the woods yet.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjouBxDcGZkf2i-AyncpsV4MDuUNaT4AEMXqvT-8M87gT2r8i5u_giVRNj3uC3IJySn7rapX5pQpq_HILGiE0F420X5uQdqUGNkCZ0zCZs1M6s_qXWNFfLbb1qbDPmZqEKbi9kMCbagBAYQ7nPei3nxu3C8fDYFqtauSwNFd9ktzr5XW...

#TLDRstocks A Return to the Giddy Anticipation of Rate Cuts – Market Breadth https://drduru.com/onetwentytwo/2024/09/15/return-to-giddy-anticipation-of-rate-cuts-market-breadth/ The stock market poetically swung from the depths of despair with a seasonal September drawdown to a sharp rebound in giddy anticipation of rate cuts from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday. The highly anticipated meeting has the potential to set the market’s tone for the remainder of the year. If Chair Jerome Powell sets an explicit roadmap for rate cuts, the market could quickly rally to price in the entire package. If Powell decides to tease the market with more step-by-step, meeting-by-meeting, data point by data point decision-making, then the market could quickly sell-off in disappointment. Importantly, the market is split evenly on whether the Fed will nibble or take a meaningful bite...Thus, either choice has the potential to disappoint half the market.
