A depositary receipt (DR) is a negotiable financial instrument issued by a bank to represent a foreign company’s publicly traded securities. The DR allows investors to buy and sell the underlying securities without having to go through the process of purchasing them on a foreign exchange. DRs are typically traded on a local stock exchange and are denominated in the local currency.
